Super 6s Win!
Wonderful Win - Wanderers' Wobble
What a brilliant afternoon of Indoor Hockey from the Super 6s. They thoroughly deserved a 3-2 win over Wanderers' Mens' 5s.
Defenders: Connor and Ross
Midfielders: Alfie, Gav, Craig and Sam
Forwards: Cameron and Jake
Player/Coaches: Craig and Gav
Match Coach: Chris
Fans: Lillian and Abby, Suzie and Mr Suzie (!!), Nic and I
So how did the match go?
The first half started slowly. Without a match clock it was tricky to record the action against the non-existent clock, but it was quite a stodgy start to the match. At some point around the 5 or 6 minute mark, our players earned a short corner. It came in really cleanly, but was blocked by Wanderers' defenders. The resultant long corner (??) (I think that's what it's called) produced a shot on goal from Alfie, but again, the Wanderers' defence stood firm. Nice strike from Alfie though.
Soon after the team earned another short corner, however, again it resulted in a longer corner... No goal.
The remainder of the first half continued in the same vein. A lot of competition in midfield and brilliant defence from Connor, Ross and Rich as a trio, which kept Wanderers out. Then, in the best traditions of sporting endeavour, our guys scored 1 minute before half time! Ross played the ball out from right back to right midfield where Craig picked it up. He saw Sam unlock the Wanderers' defence by sliding laterally from right to left 'D'. Craig laid on an inch perfect pass to Sam, who slotted it home.
Half time: DWHC 0 - 1 GMHC
Chris led the half-time team talk. He had lots of positives to take away from the firs half and the boys fed off this positivity as the second half got underway.
With the scoreboard clock now working, we can record that at minute 4 of the second half, the Super 6s went 2-0 up following a goal-line save off our goalie's toes which freed Ross at right back. Ross found Craig again, up field (no less!) and with due aplomb, the latter slotted-home the 6s' second goal.
DWHC 0 - 2 GHMC
Then...the come back....
Wanderers had a good team out today. Like ours, it was a mix of experience and youthfulness and they deserved what happened next. At minute 9 of the second half they scored when they found a rare gap in defence and drove home a blistering shot down to the goalie's right.
DWHC 1 - 2 GMHC
Then they drew level with a fantastic strike to our goalie's top right from a short corner.
DWHC 2 - 2 GMHC
Match square! Thirteen minutes played of the second half and it looked like this was heading for a draw.
However, testament to the skills and experience of our 'senior' players and the tenaciousness of our younger players, Sam and the gang scored in the penultimate minute of the second half. With great link play from defence, through midfield and then up to Sam, the scoring assassin nailed a goal
DWHC 2 - 3 GMHC
This left the fans on tenterhooks for the last 90 seconds of the match! And what a long 90 seconds that was.
However, Connor and Ross provided great stability at the back. The midfield combo didn't panic, despite a fairly sizeable age and strength advantage that Wanderers had and the forwards always made themselves available for an out-ball. Our boys were brilliant and dictated the last 90 seconds of the match; following which the fans were able to breathe out!!
DWHC 2 - 3 GMHC
Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant.
Thank you for a very enjoyable afternoon guys.
Looking forward to the Club derby against the 5s next week.
