Lots of potential in this young Squad
By Richard Witte
Match day 1
The Squad: Alistair, Andrew, Angus, Craig, Ian, Logan, Marcus, Nairn, Rich
The Plan: Craig and Ian were our anchors and tactical conductors in defence. They played a half each and provided brilliant advice and support to the young 'uns! Andrew played as a super-effective attacking defender and Marcus was charged with linking defence with attack. Angus played as a marauding midfielder/attacker and Alistair, Logan and Nairn were required to play high against Monarchs and stretch their defence.
The goal!!: At 9 minutes into the match, Marcus won the ball in midfield. He had 2 Defenders on him but his skills took him through both Monarchs players. He found Angus on the deep right side of Monarchs' 'D', where the latter displayed instantly-brilliant control in trapping the ball then slotting it home beyond the opposition's Goalie. Lovely finish from Angus.
1-0 up at half time was a fair reflection of how well the boys played.
The second half was a much tougher proposition though as Monarchs played their 4 adult players, which included their player with goalkeeping privileges. Their adults brought more speed, physicality and experience to their attack and they were pretty much unplayable at times in that second half. Credit to our boys though as their heads never dropped and they maintained a really positive attitude.
So overall, there is much to look forward to from our players. They will improve collectively as a team and will learn to play off each other, rather than as individuals. Training during the week and competing on Sundays will also see them get faster and stronger around the pitch.
Man of the Match: Andrew. He was tenacious in defence, showed an excellent 'engine' in getting up and down the right-hand channel and set up scoring opportunities as well. Brilliant job!
