On Wednesday evening Ladies 3's played their penultimate match of the 2023 season against Blairgowrie Hockey Club at Dawson Park.
The midweek match meant we managed to get a healthy 16 (must be a record!) players on the roster, with thanks to Odette and Iona for bolstering the numbers and to Zoe for going in goal.
The match started off fairly balanced with both teams having good possession of the ball up and down the pitch. Blairgowrie had a number of shots on the GMHC goal in the first quarter, but Zoe made light work of these attacks even with the low setting sun being in her eyeline.
Blairgowrie's team talk must have worked as the opposition came out on the attack in Q2 and applying pressure to the Grove Menzieshill defensive line, in doing so a number of shorts were won but Blairgowrie couldn't capitalise on these opportunities. Blairgowrie continued the push making sure the keeper didn't get any time to rest.
With ends swapped the players took to the pitch for Q3, GMHC started applying a pressure that seen the ball spend more time up in the Blairgowrie half, this attacking play paid off when Farrah McCulloch sent the ball hurtling towards the back post where Kirsty Caddick was in wait to make the score line 0-1! The teams reset and started play again only for Grove Menzieshill to push the attack again this time getting the ball to Abbie Chapman who sent the ball flying into the back of the net making it 0-2 within 2 minutes!
Blairgowrie weren't going to just roll over and let us walk away with the victory, Q4 saw a renewed push from the team. 5 minutes into the quarter a lone Blairgowrie player made a break past our defense to go 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper, the attack was saved but managed to find its way through the keeper's legs on rebound to bring the score up to 1-2. Blairgowrie pushed hard for the rest of the quarter and made for a nail biting 10 minutes for the everyone watching until the final whistle blew.
A well-deserved win for the Ladie's who have worked hard this season.
A huge thanks as always to Katie Joss for coaching and also to Tom Dalgarno for umpiring the match.
