Grove Menzieshill U16 Boys 4–3 Grove Menzieshill U16 Girls

Friday night saw the sun set over Dawson Park as 24 members of our U16 squad came together for their first match of the new season — and what followed was a fantastic, competitive contest between the boys and girls.

It was the girls who made the stronger start, racing into a 2–0 lead and putting the boys firmly on the back foot.

But the boys weren't going to let them have it all their own way.

They fought their way back into the contest, finding their rhythm and getting themselves level before half-time to make it 2–2.

The second half developed into a brilliant end-to-end battle, with both sides showing plenty of determination, skill and competitive spirit.

With just 10 minutes remaining, the boys finally edged in front for the first time, making it 4–3.

That set up a dramatic finish.

The girls threw everything they had at the boys in search of an equaliser, effectively surrounding the boys goal during the final five minutes. Shot after shot came towards goal, but the boys stood firm, defending with tremendous enthusiasm — including several crucial goal-line saves to protect their lead.

When the final whistle eventually arrived, it was the boys who celebrated a 4–3 victory, but the real winner on the night was the development and spirit of our young players.

A fantastic step into the senior pathway
Youth Coordinator Harry Byers was delighted to see so many players making the step up:

"It was fantastic to see so many young players stepping up from our junior programme and now becoming part of our senior youth programme.

"The development of our young players is something we are incredibly proud of, and the support of the Centenary Club is playing a huge part in making this possible.

"The continued support from our Centenary Club is clearly making a difference, and we are now seeing so many young players progressing through the club and into our senior youth programme.
