Riverside. Pushback 3pm (ish)
An autumnal afternoon at Riverside brought a tough fixture for the Grove MH 2nd XI. Dundee University 1s provided a strong contest which required our boys to think their way through the match. It proved difficult for the team to translate training pitch process to game play initially but once they settled down and began to trust those around them the play improved immeasurably.
Special mention as always for the senior members of the team who gave up their time to support this talented bunch of youngsters as their skills and confidence on the pitch mature.
It was 0-0 at half time. Some strong plays in the first half came up against stalwart resistance from the students. The finishing touch was lacking, but not for long. A half time team talk called for less panic whilst in possession, improved leads and a focus on completing passes properly. Communication was lacking at times too.
The second half brought renewed vigour and a much better team performance. There was a clarity in purpose and even some effective comms.
Possession brought a series of attacks down both wings, Murdo Kiddie, Finlay Duncan, Murray Griffiths and Dylan Lothian all contributing. The pressure brought a 5th short corner which was won with a simple foot in the D. The initial shot was parried by the University Keeper but Connor Chapman was on hand to finish the job with a solid flick into the roof of the net.
The goal raised the Grove spirits. More confidence, more effective and direct hockey.
A series of intricate passes brought the second goal from Chapman in the final quarter and the game was closed out from there. The running off the ball improved and created space for players to drive into.
Man of the match was shared between Alfie Bonnar and Archie Macdonald. Both acquitted themselves well. Bonnar Jnr ran the midfield and broke the line on more than one occasion whilst Macdonald provided a reliable outlet at right back, linking with Finlay Duncan at inside right very effectively.
The team looks forward to St Andrews University IIs next weekend.
